Writing for the Web
This is a seminar that applies the Information
Mapping principles and tools to the development of content designed to work
in the web environment.
Problem: Content structured for the Web
Users do not read Websites. They use sites to navigate through to the specific
details they need at any point in time. Writers must develop content, therefore,
that
- is non-linear and modular in structure
- is sequenced in an intuitive way
so users can skip what they don't need and zero in on what they do need
- is
reusable and accessible from various parts of the site
- is self-contained and
comprehensible on its own
- is easy to maintain and update as Web content is
constantly changing, and
- adheres to standards for information design, navigation
design, and visual presentation.
And all this must be consistent, even though teams of different writers all
contribute content at different times.
Our 'Mapping' solution
The Information Mapping method as taught in Writing for
the Web helps Web
writers create sites that
- address the needs of multiple audiences
- adhere to research-based design
and presentation standards
- are structured with reusable, self-contained
content modules ideal for the web, and
- provide navigation that is intuitive
and user-based.
