Usability Testing
Is your information usable? Do your Web pages achieve what you want? Do your
manuals do work they were designed for?
This page describes how Information Mapping Canada measures the usability
of information through usability testing.
What is usability testing?
Usability testing is a means for measuring how well people can use some human-made
object (such as a web page, a computer interface, a document) for its intended
purpose.
Reasons for testing
A usability test finds problems that can be repaired before the product is
finished by
- identifying areas of an information product where users have difficulty,
and
- allowing the product developers to correct or support those areas.
What a usability test involves
Usability testing involves
- asking intended users of a product or system to
perform one or more tasks
- recording and measuring their
- performance
- comments, and
- answers to specific interview questions.
Our usability testing service
Information Mapping Canada works with our clients to
- identify the purpose of
an information product
- develop a series of tasks derived from using the
information product
- conducts and records a set of individuals using the
information to accomplish the task
- analyzes the test results to uncover consistent
performance patterns that reveal where the information does or does not work,
and
- recommends adjustments to the information to improve its usability.
